The onset of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis caught us all unprepared, but it was the low-income sections of society that were hit the hardest. To support the needy, The Akshaya Patra Foundation started its relief activities on 25 March 2020. The Anganwadi Kit Programme is one of their relief activities to support the food and hygiene needs of Anganwadi beneficiaries.

Problem We Are Trying to Solve

An Anganwadi is a rural child care system in India which combats hunger and child malnutrition.

Children in the age group 0-6 years constitute around 158 million of the population of India (2011 census). Anganwadi centres run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development are implementing various schemes for the welfare, development and protection of children.

  • to improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age group 0-6 years;
  • to lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social development of the child;
  • to reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout;
  • to achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various departments to promote child development; and
  • to enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education.

In order to achieve the above-mentioned objectives ICDS offers six main services:

  • Supplementary nutrition;
  • Pre-school non-formal education;
  • Nutrition and health education;
  • Immunization;
  • Health check-ups; and
  • Referral services

Immunisation, health check-ups, and referral services are related to health and are provided in association with national health services.

For better governance and effective delivery of these services, ICDS employs Anganwadi Centres as a platform. Thus, AWCs focus on and aim at providing holistic development for children aged between 0 and 6 years along with providing care facilities for pregnant and lactating mothers.

How We Are Going To Do It

Healthy food and hygiene boost immunity in pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children. The Akshaya Patra Foundation is providing essential kits containing nutritious food items and hygiene products to Anganwadi beneficiaries.

Each kit is packed with:

  • Glucose biscuits
  • Double fortified salt
  • Jaggery
  • Milk powder
  • Moong dal
  • Spices
  • Horlicks
  • Hygiene kit

Who Benefits

All the children aged between 0 and 6, and pregnant and lactating mothers can avail themselves of the services of AWCs. As per a government press release dated 7 February 2014, there is 14 lakh (1.4 million) approved AWCs and 7076 ICDS Projects across the country. The Anganwadi programme is an effort by the Government of India to reduce child mortality and improve maternal health – two of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals.

Long Term Impact

Anganwadi centres have a very crucial role to play towards reducing fatigue, health problems and stress of the caretaker (mothers) by contributing to one of their important responsibilities, nurturing a small child, thus giving them more time for the rest of their daily activities and family duties. This has facilitated the following impacts

Decreased worry and stress

Feel less tired of allowing women to enrol for paid labour

  • Increased household income
  • Money saved on one meal a day
  • Allowed mothers to feel more involved in community life and meet each other.
  • Provided a platform for mothers
